Refugees into Teaching – London Guidance & Support Service

Research has shown that there are hundreds of refugee teachers in the UK who want to return to teaching but face significant barriers in accessing information about training and gaining employment in schools in England.

Following the success of the previous Refugees into Teaching project, West London Partnership (WLP) made a successful bid to the European Refugee Fund Phase III (ERF) to continue providing this service. The project is co-funded by the Training & Development Agency for Schools (TDA).

The project is aimed at supporting refugee overseas trained teachers into teaching and those with previous teaching experience wishing to enter and gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). The main focus of the service will be to assist refugees into primary and secondary teaching but we will also support those wishing to work in support roles in schools and those interested in further and higher education.

We offer the following comprehensive package of support:

  • Information advice and guidance leading to an individual    training and development
  • Familiarisation programmes with the UK school system,      National Curriculum, management behaviour and other    related topics
  • Communication skills courses
  • Information sessions covering different routes into teaching and other roles in schools
  • Voluntary placements/work experience
  • Accessing different training routes e.g. GTP or OTTP
  • Job search and support
