Black & Ethnic Minority Overseas Trained Teachers into Teaching

Research has shown that there are hundreds of black & ethnic minority overseas trained teachers in the UK who want to return to teaching but face significant barriers in accessing information about training, benchmarking of qualifications from their country of origin and gaining employment in schools.

Therefore The West London Partnership (GTP/OTTP) made a successful bid to Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) to fund a project for black & ethnic minority overseas trained teachers. This project is aimed at supporting overseas trained teachers from ethnic minority background who are interested in returning to teaching via employment based training (Graduate Training Programme or Overseas Teacher Training Programme) and wish to gain qualified teacher status (QTS) to teach in primary or secondary schools.

The project will provide the following comprehensive package of support:
  • Information advice and guidance leading to an individual training and development plan
  • Familiarisation programme with the UK school system, National Curriculum, management behaviour and other related topics
  • Communication skills training
  • Information session covering different routes into teaching and other roles in schools
  • Support with finding placements in schools
  • Voluntary work experience in schools
  • Accessing different training routes e.g. GTTP or OTTP
  • Job search and support
