space space space Eligibility

Prior to approaching schools applicants should check eligibility for the Graduate Teacher Programme (GTP). Applicants should work through the application checklist and complete the questions. Applicants should not approach schools for a training place if they do not meet the selection criteria regarding recent school experience. The applicant should at this stage approach schools to gain pre-application experience.

GTP START DATES AND APPLICATION CLOSING DATES
The WLP is currently considering applicants for the GTP as follows:

Secondary GTP April 2009 Intake - closing date extended

The closing date was Friday 12th December 2008 and this has been extended to Friday 23rd January 2009 subject to availability.  There are a limited number of funded places available for shortage subjects only, (no funded places for non shortage subjects, no places for self-funded GTP).

Secondary GTP September 2009 Intake for which the closing date is Friday 27th February 2009 (subject to availability, funded places for non shortage subjects are very limited).

Primary Please note:
1. There is no April intake for primary GTP.
2. As of the September 2008 programme, due to excessive demand, usually only one funded training place will be allocated to each school in the first instance.

Primary GTP September 2009 Intake - CLOSED
The Closing date was Friday 12th December 2008.  A waiting list is now in operation.   Applications received by the closing date have been added to the waiting list.

Primary GTP September 2010 Intake

The closing date is Friday 11th December 2009 subject to availability.

ALLOCATION OF FUNDED TRAINING PLACES
The WLP recommends that applications are submitted well before the closing dates listed above as places are subject to availability. The WLP provisionally allocates places upon receipt of application and strictly in date of application order.

Applications are checked for meeting eligibility and selection criteria, and applications not meeting these criteria fully are not accepted, in this event the application will be returned.
Approval for the GTP is confirmed following a WLP interview, therefore, applying by the closing date does not guarantee a place for any particular start date. For primary GTP, as of the September 2008 programme the WLP will usually only allocate one funded training place to each school in the first instance.

You can call the WLP office to check availability of places before submitting your application, but we can not guarantee any particular start date. Please note that the allocation of funded secondary non-shortage subject places is very limited, and therefore early application is strongly advised.

All applicants need to have found a school that is willing in principle to offer a training place before completing an application form. How to approach schools for recent school experience and a training place is covered at Guidance on gaining school experience.

SELF-FUNDED GTP PROGRAMMES
The WLP takes some trainees on a self-funded school basis. These places are open to independent schools where the national curriculum is taught and state schools unable to access funded places. From 2008/9 the WLP is limiting the number of self-funded training places and can only accept applications from schools within the Local Authority areas we work with.

For the 2008/9 academic year all self-funded places have been allocated and for 2009/10 the WLP will allocate a maximum of 20 self-funded GTP places (10 Primary, 10 Secondary). For further information please contact the WLP office.
